Project Volunteers in the Protected Areas has finished
On August 9th, 2012, a student project called Practical Studies in the Protected Areas ended. The project aimed to raise young adults’ awareness of the importance of environmental protection. Over 600 students from the Free and Agrarian Universities participated in the project.
Under the direction of the Agency’s existing action plan, student volunteers from the Free and Agrarian Universities participated in different environmental protection activities at the Tusheti, Borjomi-Kharagauli, Mtirala, Kintrishi, Lagodekhi and Imereti Protected Areas. They repaired a water supply system in Tusheti, participated in clean up events at different protected areas, took part in tourist trail and infrastructure rehabilitation works, marked the trails, and arranged camping and picnic spots. Volunteers also actively assisted local communities living near the protected areas to develop their tourist and visitor services. They also helped facilitate guesthouse operation.
This project is not the only of its kind. It is but the first of many and will be re-implemented in the future. Events like Practical Studies in the Protected Areas enable young adults to expand their practical skills and knowledge relating to protecting biodiversity and to increase environmental awareness.
