The Agency of Protected Areas launching a new model of sustainable use of forest resources
In accordance with the Forest Code of Georgia, the Agency of Protected Areas has developed a new methodology, which provides an opportunity to improve the access of the local population to firewood resources and is in full alignment with internationally recognized principles of sustainable use.
Launching a new model will contribute to sustainable forest management in protected areas and biodiversity protection.
The public hearing of the developed methodology was arranged within the framework of the project "Advancing Sustainable Development and Protected Area Management System". The project is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the government of Sweden, under the Governance Reform Fund (GRF) project.
It should be noted that from 2026, the amendment provided for in the Forest Code of Georgia will come into effect for the Agency of Protected Areas, which implies the production, sorting, and stacking of timber resources in so-called warehouses by a specialized body. Consequently, the local population will be able to purchase greenhouse firewood resources only from warehouses.
