Managed Nature Reserve
There are 27 Managed Nature Reserves in Georgia, with a total area of 106,705.37 hectares.
Until 1996, the category of Managed Nature Reserve did not exist in Georgia. At that time, State Forestry and Hunting Farms had been established and were managed by the Main Department of Protected Areas, Nature Reserves and Hunting Farms of Georgia. Starting in 1997, in accordance with the Law of Georgia on Wildlife, Managed Nature Reserves were established on the basis of the existing State Forestry and Hunting Farms.
A Managed Nature Reserve is one of the categories of protected areas. It may be established to protect the natural conditions necessary for the conservation of wild species of living organisms of national importance, groups of species, biocenoses, and formations of inanimate nature, where special restoration and management measures by humans are required.
Under strict control, the use of certain renewable natural resources is permitted within a Managed Nature Reserve.
