State Nature Reserve
There are 14 State Nature Reserves in Georgia, with a total area of 128,967.5 hectares. The first reserve, Lagodekhi State Nature Reserve, was established in 1912.
A State Nature Reserve is one of the categories of protected areas. A State Nature Reserve may be established for the purpose of preserving nature, natural processes, and genetic resources in a dynamic and undisturbed state, as well as for conducting scientific research, educational activities, and environmental monitoring with minimal impact on the natural environment.
A State Nature Reserve must encompass a state-owned land area and/or water area of sufficient size and in an appropriate condition to ensure the preservation of natural features and processes without the need for special management or restoration measures.
Access to protected areas of this category is permitted only for educational purposes and for conducting non-manipulative scientific research.
