The Agency of Protected Areas continues to develop recreational infrastructure
The Agency of Protected Areas continues to develop recreational infrastructure. This year, approximately 10 million GEL will be spent from the state budget to improve infrastructure, said Tamar Khakhishvili, Deputy Chairperson of the Agency of Protected Areas.
Over the past year, the Agency of Protected Areas actively worked on creating and improving eco-tourism infrastructure. The implemented projects aimed to establish a safe, comfortable, and eco-friendly environment for visitors. This direction remains a priority, and work will continue into the current year, noted Tamar Khakhishvili, Deputy Chairperson of the Agency of Protected Areas.
In 2025, tourist infrastructure was constructed and upgraded across various protected areas, including Prometheus Cave, Vashlovani Protected Areas, Martvili Canyon, Okatse and Kinchkha waterfalls, and Erusheti National Park. This included informational, interpretative, safety, and road signage; fully equipping eco-tourist cottages; and building cafeterias near Martvili Canyon and Kinchkha Waterfall.
“This year, the Agency continues to develop eco-tourism infrastructure, with approximately 10 million GEL from the state budget allocated for infrastructure improvements,” Tamar Khakhishvili stated.
In Tbilisi National Park, the setup of three visitor centers, 160 km of hiking trails, three tourist shelters, and 44 picnic spaces will be completed, alongside the development of interpretative boards and other minor recreational infrastructure. In Kobuleti Protected Areas, work on disability-accessible tourist infrastructure will be finalized, while informational, interpretative, and road directional signage will be renewed across six protected areas.
Concurrently, work continues on establishing a 127 km network of trails connecting the Tusheti–Pshav-Khevsureti–Kazbegi protected areas, complete with accompanying tourist infrastructure, scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
Furthermore, in Birtvisi Canyon, the eco-tourism infrastructure development project - which includes a visitor center, viewing platform, suspension bridges, cottages, picnic areas, and a zipline - will be completed and officially opened.
