In Strasbourg, France, the awarding of the European Diploma for Protected Areas to the Lagodekhi Protected Areas was discussed during a meeting of the Council of Europe group

In Strasbourg, France, the awarding of the European Diploma for Protected Areas to the Lagodekhi Protected Areas was discussed during a meeting of the Council of Europe group. Tamar Khakhishvili, Deputy Chairperson of the Agency of Protected Areas, attended the event.

It is worth noting that the Agency of Protected Areas submitted the nomination of Lagodekhi Protected Areas for the European Diploma in 2025 and received a positive evaluation in the initial phase. The next stage will involve a field visit by experts to the Lagodekhi Protected Areas.

The European Diploma is the Council of Europe's highest recognition, awarded to protected areas of exceptional ecological and landscape value.

“Lagodekhi Protected Areas is the first protected area in Georgia and boasts a history spanning over a century. Awarding the European Diploma to this territory will signify international recognition of both its effective management and its pristine nature,” noted Tamar Khakhishvili, Deputy Chairperson of the Agency of Protected Areas.

Currently, Vashlovani Protected Areas stands as the only protected area in Georgia to hold the European Diploma, highlighting its outstanding ecological significance.

The European Diploma for Protected Areas is a prestigious international award established in 1965 on the initiative of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
