Transboundary Joint Secretariat in the South Caucasus (Phase III)
Project
The Transboundary Joint Secretariat (TJS) is one of the three components of the South Caucasus Nature Conservation Programme, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the German Development Bank (KfW).
The TJS supports the environmental ministries and protected area management authorities of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia in improving regional cooperation and promoting the development and harmonization of the nature conservation sector. The project’s main objective is to further develop the Ecoregional Conservation Plan and improve the status of its implementation across the South Caucasus countries.
As a result of the project, a methodology was developed to support the socioeconomic development of communities living adjacent to protected areas. Work was completed on guidelines for developing tourism strategies and action plans for protected areas, on the basis of which tourism development strategies and action plans were prepared for Lagodekhi, Vashlovani, and Javakheti Protected Areas. Practical ornithological training sessions were conducted for rangers of the Javakheti Protected Areas Administration to support cross-border biodiversity monitoring between Javakheti National Park in Georgia and Arpi Lake National Park in Armenia. Several infrastructure projects were also prepared, among other activities.
