Badlands National Park, USA – Vashlovani National Park
The landscape of Badlands National Park was shaped over millions of years by processes driven by water and wind. Approximately half a million years ago, continued erosion ultimately formed what became known as the “Bad Lands.”
During the summer months, temperatures can reach 100°F (38°C), while in winter they can fall to −18°F (−28°C). Temperatures can fluctuate significantly throughout the day, meaning that sunny weather can suddenly give way to thunderstorms and blizzards.
Badlands National Park covers approximately 99,000 hectares and protects one of the largest areas of mixed-grass prairie in the United States. The park is home to numerous species of animals and plants, including approximately 200 bird species, deer, swift foxes, bighorn sheep, and bison. Other mammals found in the park include bats, rabbits, and coyotes. Pronghorn and deer are frequently seen throughout the park, particularly near picnic areas. Reptiles and amphibians include frogs, toads, and snakes.
Badlands National Park is rich in ancient fossils, making it a particularly attractive and fascinating destination from a paleontological perspective.
