Tskhaltsitela River Valley Natural Monument

Attraction: The natural monument is a picturesque canyon-like valley of the Tskhaltsitela River, covered with beautiful Colchic forest and distinguished by its exceptional natural beauty. According to legend, the river was given its name during the Battle of Khresili, when the water allegedly turned red with blood. In reality, when the river rises, it washes over red earth and rock formations, which are widespread throughout Okriba along the river, causing the water to take on a reddish color.

Numerous mineral springs, both on land and underwater, flow into the river and give it remarkable therapeutic properties. The river is rich in trout, barbel, chub, murtsa, kashap, tobi, shemaya, and other fish species. Otters and nutria inhabit the riverbanks. In winter, various waterfowl can be observed, while mammals such as jackals, foxes, and badgers are also found in the valley.

The valley is further enhanced by important historical and cultural monuments, including the Gelati Monastery Complex and the Monastery of the Holy Martyrs David and Constantine.
