Year:

Pshav-Khevsureti Protected Areas are located in the Dusheti Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region and include three different categories of protected areas: Pshav-Khevsureti National Park, Asa Reserve and Roshki Nature Monument. Its total area is 79,908 ha. Pshav-Khevsureti Protected Areas are located 150 km from the capital.

The main goal of the creation of the Pshav-Khevsureti Protected Areas is the protection, restoration and preservation of the organic world of the central part of the East Caucasus.

Pshav-Khevsureti Protected Areas are distinguished in Georgia for their unique landscapes and international biodiversity, which includes rare and endemic species of flora and fauna protected by the Red List of Georgia.

Unique examples of landscape diversity are represented in the Pshav-Khevsureti protected areas by contrasting examples of the inorganic world, such as the lakes of Tanie, Tsodviani, Mitkhuli, Kopala and Astajuri, unique glaciers and the Chaukhe mountain system.

The main value of the Pshav-Khevsureti protected areas is the vegetation from the middle belt of mountain forests to the Nival belt, which includes oak, mixed-deciduous, pine and birch-dominated subalpine forests and alpine meadows on narrow and sloping slopes. Among the woody plants, the most notable are lime, rowan, maple, aspen, and panta, and among the shrubs, deka, yel, bilberry, currant, raspberry. Among the species on the Red List of Georgia, the highland oak, elm, and Rade birch are noteworthy.

The rich vegetation of the highlands determines the diversity of the animal world, where the red-listed species of Georgia include the roe deer, mountain elk, red deer, red deer, and black grouse. Among the predators, the brown bear, lynx, jackal, otter, orb, Begobi's eagle, osprey, and others are notable.

In Pshav-Khevsureti, 11 species of reptiles and at least 5 species of amphibians are widespread, while only one species of fish (red-spotted trout) is protected by the Red List of Georgia.

Among the butterflies, the globally rare species of day butterflies Apollo, the multi-eyed ara and Arion are noteworthy.

In terms of historical and cultural heritage, Pshav-Khevsureti is one of the richest regions of Georgia. Geographical isolation and a characteristic way of life have contributed to the emergence of the Khevsurian people's unique culture and traditions. Among them, the unique architectural masterpieces of the Georgian highlands, such as Shatili and Mutso, which are part of the World Heritage, are especially noteworthy.
