Birtvisi Rocks Natural Monument
Attraction: The Birtvisi Rocks Natural Monument is a rock massif located on the southern slopes of the Trialeti Range, in the vicinity of the villages of Tbisi and Partskhisi. The area is distinguished by the rare and abundant landform formations found here, making it particularly remarkable. Medieval structures and rock-carved steps are remarkably harmoniously integrated with the natural formations.
The Birtvisi Natural Monument is unique in that it represents the easternmost outpost of Colchic flora in the Lesser Caucasus. It is also notable for its abundance of ancient cultural monuments, including Deda Tsikhe (Mother Fortress), a baptismal font carved into porphyritic tuff, a tower with gunports, a wall with gunports stretching from “Peikrisubani” toward the Birtvisi summit (the ravine along the route creates remarkable acoustic effects and echoes), a rock-carved staircase, and others.
An important characteristic of these monuments is the difficulty of accessing them. At the same time, they represent excellent examples of how natural environmental conditions were utilized and harmoniously integrated with architectural structures, which is also of considerable interest from a tourism perspective. The monument’s proximity to the capital, the accessible road, and favorable climatic conditions make it possible to visit the protected area even during the colder months of the year.
