Mtirala National Park Additional Sightseeing in the Region

You can visit the following sightseeing in the region:

  • Gonio Fortress, Apsaros – historic fortress in Achara, in the Gonio district of Batumi, on the Black Sea coast, at the mouth river Chorokhi, on the left side. It was here that Colchic Bronze Culture and first Georgian kingdoms of Daiaeni and Qulha (Colchis) were discovered (BC XIII-VIII)
  • Batumi Botanical Garden – it is located 9 km away from Batumi on Mtsvane Kontshki or Green Cape. The total area of the garden is 111 ha and it is 2.5 km away from Mtirala National Park Administration.
  • Ancient Historic Petra Fortress – is located in village Tsikhisdziri of Kobuleti Municipality. It dates back to VI century AD. 
  • St. Nicholas Church - is located in the city of Batumi. The construction of the church was completed in 1865 and it was considered as one of the best pieces of architecture at that time.
  • Church of Great Martyr Barbara - is located on the former territory of Batumi Military Hospital. The construction of the church began in 1888, with personal financing from Russian Emperor Alexander III, and completed in 1906. After establishing the Soviet rule, the church was abolished and together with its territory it was transferred to the Military Hospital. In 1997 the church was restored.
  • Batumi Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit - was built by Catholic residents of Batumi in 2000. Photo Gallery 
  • In 1899, Russian Emperor granted the permission to the Jewish residents of Batumi to build a synagogue. The synagogue was built in 1904 according to the architectural project of a famous Architect Lev Volkovich. The same year, Jewish population of Batumi celebrated the opening of the synagogue with joy. In 1929, the Soviet government decided to close down the synagogue along with places of worship of other denominations. Various sports organizations were functioning in the building of the synagogue for years. In 1998, the synagogue building was handed back to the Jewish residents of Batumi.   • The construction of Batumi Boulevard started in 1881. It was an initiative of Batumi Precinct Governor A.I. Smekalov to build it. Smekalov ordered the famous German gardener Reseller to build the seaside boulevard. The boulevard has gone through several stages of development during its existence. During last years, the area of Batumi Boulevard has increased significantly and currently its length amounts to 7 km. The Colourful Dancing Fountain has been functioning in the boulevard since 1977, the architectural project of which belongs to a Georgian Architect G. Erkomaishvili. In September of 2008, the renovated fountain was returned back to the city. Photo Gallery
  • Batumi Park of May 6 - is one of the oldest civic gardens in Georgia. Its history is more than 130 years old. The construction of the park began in 1881 to the south-east of Nuri-Geli Lake. A gardener from Prussia, Resler was heading the construction works. In 1885, a French Gardener, Michel Dalfons was invited to head the construction of the garden and the boulevard, construction of which had begun earlier. At that time, the total area of the park amounted to 78,000 m2. To honor the Russian Empire the park was named Alexander's Garden. In 1932 the park was transformed into a park of culture and leisure, in 1933 - into children's park and later - park of pioneers. It has been called Park of May 6 since 2006. Photo Gallery
